Things that we’re finding interesting or useful - and you might too!
Welcome to the May edition of our occasional series where we share resources that we’re finding useful. Some will have wide appeal, some will be more specialized, and some you’ll shake your head and smile at our strange interests!
BOOK: GOD’S GENERALS BY ROBERTS LIARDON
I love reading about men and women of faith! It’s fascinating to see ordinary, imperfect people who were obedient to the call of God and who consequently were used to do amazing things for the King and His Kingdom. There are several books in the series, which share the inspirational stories of such people as Billy Graham, William and Catherine Booth, and Aimee Semple McPherson.
PODCAST: STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW
Our friend David Patterson sent us this podcast all about the power of Dandelions! It’s from Stuff You Should Know, called The Fascinating History of Dandelions. It’s so interesting - dandelions are amazing, and such a great analogy for the work of the Spirit!.
MUSIC: LOW BY KORY MILLER
A song I can’t stop listening to right now is Low by Kory Miller. It’s a challenging invitation into greater humility. These lyrics really stand out:
This is not an empire,
It’s Your Kingdom.
I’m sorry that I tried to be the king.
I didn’t even realize
You were missing.
From now on
Let my posture be,
Low.
Down on my face,
Under the weight,
All I can say is
You are holy.
I can’t look away,
Ever be the same,
All I can say is
You are holy.
QUOTE
“While Christianity has established a rule and order, the chief aim of that order is to give room for good things to run wild.” (GK Chesterton)
MOVIE: NUREMBERG
A powerful movie about the Nuremberg trials of leading Nazis at the end of WW2, featuring an incredible performance by Russell Crowe as Herman Göring, the most senior Nazi captured. We see both his humanity and his utter rottenness of spirit as he positioned himself at the heart of an evil empire. The film wrestles with the question: were these evil deeds done by good people, or were these evil people who sometimes did good things?
SCRIPTURE: PSALM 23 NLT
I heard the NLT translation of this part of Psalm 23 read aloud and appreciated the fresh angle on a rich yet familiar passage.
You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.
You honor me by anointing my head with oil.
My cup overflows with blessings.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the LORD
forever.
Psalm 23:5–6 (NLT)
With love,
