Why curiosity beats a sermon

The Big Idea: Apply authentic curiosity by asking open spiritual questions to help others discover the activity of God in their own stories.

We often assume that our non-Christian friends are strictly uninterested in God. This binary thinking creates an unnecessary wall that stops us from engaging with their real lives. We miss the rich spiritual history that most people carry just beneath the surface.

Moving into spiritual territory does not require a complex strategy or a jarring transition. We can treat our neighbors with the same spiritual expectation we have for our Christian friends. It is incredible what people will share when we ask with genuine kindness and respect.

Deepening a relationship allows us to ask about the experiences that shape souls. When we inquire about a spiritual journey, we signal that we value the person. This video explains how to ask the right questions at the right moments.

Key highlights

  • How to uncover a person's unique spiritual history

  • Handling the dark and light of spiritual experiences

  • A bold question to ask in the middle of a crisis

Next Steps

  1. Ask one person this week about their spiritual history or what faith looked like for them growing up.

  2. If a friend is facing a tough decision, ask them what they think the advice of Jesus might be.

  3. Pray for a specific opportunity to ask an open-ended spiritual question to a neighbor.

Trust that the Spirit is already at work in the lives of those around you.

With love,
