Things that we’re finding interesting or useful - and you might too!

Welcome to the July edition of our occasional series where we share resources that we’re finding useful. Some will have wide appeal, some will be more specialized, and some you’ll shake your head and smile at our strange interests!

BOOK: 605 EVERYDAY MIRACLES

Chloe Swart noticed that a lot of churches in Wales (where she lives and ministers) were seeing healings. To investigate further, she did a PhD in research at a secular university to study this phenomenon.

Her research involved gathering stories from believers all over Wales... and ended up with 605 clear healing testimonies!

We have met Chloe several times through our involvement with the Alpha Course, as she leads Alpha in the UK. She grabbed our attention over the first dinner with her account of this research and its outcomes. It’s especially interesting that a secular university has accepted this as a credible and groundbreaking academic project!

Chloe has now done the wider church a huge service by turning some of those stories, along with her reflections, into a short and highly-readable book, 605 Everyday Miracles. As she asks on the back cover, What if miracles weren’t rare... but woven into everyday life?

She “only” includes 199 of those stories, and adds in helpful insights and reflections. She has noticed 6 patterns that characterize churches that regularly see more healings (her research showed that they see double the number of healings when compared to churches that don’t have these 6 marks). You’ll need to read the book to get those!

This is a great book, a quick read, and something that you can share widely. It’s very faith-building, and we heartily recommend it.

PODCAST: REFLECTION ON 40 YEARS OF MINISTRY

Christine Caine is a mighty woman of God! She and her husband Nick founded the anti-human trafficking organization, The A21 Campaign, which works at the local, domestic, and international level to end modern-day slavery. She is also a well-known speaker, leader, and author.

In this interview with Carey Nieuwhof, she looks back on the ups and downs of 40 years of ministry. While the title is about women, she talks about way more, including healthy vs unhealthy leadership and the pain and necessity of pruning.

I love that after all these years her heart is still passionately devoted to Jesus and to equipping His bride. She encourages us to keep our eyes fixed on Him and to His call on our lives and not to get bogged down by what others are saying around us.

MUSIC: RESTORE OUR GAZE

Our youngest son Isaac is part of Fixate church in Phoenix. He’s been part of things since just before it planted, and loves the community there. One of the things you notice on a Sunday morning is how many young adults are there, and their passionate worship.

Recently, Fixate released their new worship album, which you likely won’t have run across!

Tea of the Month

Harney & Sons make some well-balanced teas, and last week I rediscovered their Paris blend. It’s a black tea, with vanilla, blackcurrant, and gentle fruity sweetness to it. Tasty in the afternoon, with or without milk!
