The hard work of obedience
Discipleship is not about gathering more information; it is the rhythmic practice of hearing what Jesus says and immediately putting it into action.
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." (James 1:22)
We often fall into the trap of thinking that more information equals more spiritual maturity. We attend the studies, read the books, and listen to the sermons, yet our lives remain remarkably unchanged. This is the subtle danger of a religious mentality that values hearing over doing.
Real discipleship is actually an apprenticeship where we learn to hold the tools of life the way Jesus does. He is the master coach, and we are the students learning a specific trade. If we ignore his instructions while claiming to be his followers, we are only deceiving ourselves.
The core of our walk with God comes down to two simple questions that we must ask in every situation. We need to know what Jesus is saying right now and how we are going to respond to him. When we align our actions with his voice, we finally begin to build our lives on a foundation that lasts.
