Building trust through deep listening
Use open-ended spiritual questions to honor others' journeys and invite them to consider Jesus' perspective in their everyday lives.
"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone" (Colossians 4:6).
We sometimes assume that people who do not follow Jesus have no interest in spiritual things. This binary thinking stops us from engaging with the profound stories and experiences our neighbors are already having. We can learn to ask kind questions that respect their journey while pointing toward the truth.
Asking about someone's faith background or their experience with prayer is not as intrusive as we might fear. When we approach these topics with genuine curiosity, we signal that we value their history and their perspective. Most people have had some kind of spiritual encounter and are looking for a safe place to process it.
We can even ask people what they think Jesus would say about their current challenges. If people know we follow Christ, they are often surprisingly open to looking at life through his lens. This practice builds a bridge to deeper ministry and shows that faith is relevant in every situation.

Next Steps
Ask a friend about their spiritual story or what faith looked like for them growing up.
In a moment of conversation about a difficult decision, ask the person what they think Jesus would want them to do.
Look for a chance to ask someone if they have ever had a spiritual experience they could not explain.
Your interest in their story is a reflection of the heart of the Father.
With love,
Alex + Hannah
