How the praying people of a struggling church saw a powerful and sustained move of the Spirit
Recently, I (Hannah) pulled an old book off our shelf, Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala. It tells the story of how the Brooklyn Tabernacle went from a struggling congregation to a thriving, multi-ethnic church in New York City.
A turning point came when Cymbala sensed God saying to him, “If you and your wife will lead My people to pray and call upon My name, you will never lack for something fresh to preach, or for the resources you need.”
Later, reflecting on Jesus’ words when He cleared the temple (Matthew 21:13; Luke 19:46), Cymbala wrote, “The atmosphere of My Father’s house is to be prayer. The aroma around My Father must be people opening their hearts in worship and supplication. This is not a place to make a buck. This is a house for calling on the Lord. Does the Bible ever say anywhere from Genesis to Revelation, ‘My house shall be called a house of preaching’?”
That question struck me. We can easily fill our lives and ministries with good things:
Deep Bible studies,
Inspiring services,
Sacrificial service to the poor,
Creative programs.
These are all valuable. Yet at the end of the day, what God desires most is our heart.
Watch more here:
“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” (2 Chronicles 16:9)
What if God looked at our community and found hearts fully committed to seeking Him? What might He do in response?
Next Steps
Choose one way this week to seek God’s heart more intentionally, whether on your own or with others:
Spend five minutes sitting with Jesus with no agenda, just giving God your full attention.
Pause briefly before a meeting, conversation, or decision to invite God’s presence.
Join (or start) a prayer gathering in your church or neighborhood.
With love,
Alex + Hannah
