Jesus is asking, ‘What do you see?’
I recently came across this photo from a trip to Paris, taken at the Musée de l'Orangerie. The museum is famous for its massive, curved rooms filled with Claude Monet's "Water Lilies."
As I entered one of these rooms, ready to be immersed in the beautiful art, I was struck by what I saw - or rather, what I didn't see. Most of the people in the room weren't looking at the gorgeous paintings in front of them. Instead, their heads were bowed, completely engrossed in their phones!
That moment felt like a perfect metaphor for modern life. We are often surrounded by amazing, beautiful, and important things—whether it's a piece of art, the quiet beauty of nature, or the people right in front of us. Yet, we're so easily distracted. Our attention is constantly pulled away by the endless notifications on our phones and the many other demands of a busy world.
In the book of Jeremiah, there's a fascinating scene where God begins training the young prophet. Twice in the first chapter (verses 11 and 13), God asks him the same simple question: "What do you see?" It's not complicated theology or complex instructions—just an invitation to notice what's actually there.
And I believe God still asks us the same question: “What do you see?”
This is one of the ways God communicates with us: through what we can see, hear, and experience around us. But here's the catch—we have to be paying attention.
If our senses are constantly overloaded, or numbed by distraction, we won’t be able to notice what He’s pointing out.
It’s not just about noticing what’s beautiful—though that’s a good start. Sometimes Jesus highlights the ordinary or even the uncomfortable to get our attention.
Whether it’s a..

Mundane moment in your day
...Jesus may be inviting you to see with fresh eyes and listen for His voice.
So, how do we create the space to truly see what's in front of us? How do we tune out the noise and distractions to notice what God is doing?
Next Steps
Take a Step Back: Consider where you're overwhelming your senses. Are you constantly listening to podcasts, scrolling through social media, or watching TV? Try eliminating one of these distractions for a day or even an hour.
Ask God, “What do you want me to see?” Instead of rushing through your usual routines, try asking this question and then actually pausing to look around. You might be surprised by what you see when you're genuinely looking.
Learning to see is a spiritual practice.
So lift your head.
Slow your pace.
And ask again: “Lord, what do You want me to see?”
With love,
Alex + Hannah
